Snake Attacks Kayaker

What would you do?

Snake attacks kayakerThere is always some kind of dramatic headlines on social media like Shark Attacks Kayaker or Snake Attacks Kayaker. On Saturday, May 27th at For Parker State Park, my fishing buddy, Russ, and I experienced something neither of us had ever seen. A copperhead hell bent on getting in the boat with a kayaker. Who was the kayaker? Russ!

It was a warm day on the Navasota River in May. Beautiful blue skies and we had our sites set on catching a large alligator gar. We launched right after day break and immediately started seeing snakes, but we had no idea what was in store for us.

After hitting several spots on our way up the river, we came to a large deep opening in the river with high vegetation on each side and low current. The perfect spot to set up and drop bait.  Or so we thought. Ten minutes after I dropped the bait, it got lodged under a branch on the river bottom. I released my anchor and paddled over to get it loose, and that’s when I saw it. A large copperhead swimming across the river headed straight for Russ.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that this snake came across the river and made a bee-line for his kayak. Unfortunately, the cameras weren’t rolling during the incident, but the video below details the event, how we got away, and what “saved his bacon.”

Below the video are several links to build your own quick-disconnect anchor set up. Without it, it is very likely Russ would have been headed to the hospital.
