Kayak Shade – Sun protection
3 Ways to Use the Versa-Brella Sun Shade
It’s getting hot out there….but unfortunately, if you do like the song says and “take off all your clothes” you’ll run off your buddies and probably go to jail. So, how do you keep cool on those hot summer days? Thankfully there is kayak shade that is a great option and very affordable – The [amazon_textlink asin=’B01KILD84K’ text=’Versa-Brella’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’river0d-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’81afa520-5c15-11e7-9650-7500ace1bf25′]
There are few dangers on the water as subtle as the sun. It’s not immediately going to send us to the ER like a hook in the hand will. It’s not going to drag us down and drown us like the river can, but it can definitely have a huge effect on us from a simple light sunburn to heat exhaustion, to skin cancer. Sunblock, wide-brimmed hats, and long sleeves solve many of the problems but staying out of the sun in the first place is an even better solution.
Best Kayak Shade for the money
The Versa-Brella from Sport-Brella was seemingly created specifically as a kayak shade that can be mounted on the back of your seat. As the video describes, it can be adjusted 5 different ways and offers 10sqft of shade (see video for details).
One of the downsides to the shade is that if there is a wind over 8-10 miles an hour it acts as a sail, which gave me an idea. On several of my recent trips down the Brazos, I wanted to head back to the boat ramp at the end of the day, but wasn’t really interested in exerting any more effort than necessary. The wind was at my back, so it attached my Versa-Brella to the front handle of my kayak. Voila! Instant Sail!
I was able to go against the current without paddling at more than 3.5 miles an hour.
While I wouldn’t suggest doing this in an area with lots of stumps, on a clear stretch of water, it worked perfectly. I’ve used it this way in winds over 15 miles an hour with no problem.
Kayak Camping Gear
Lastly, the Versa-Brella is not only a great kayak shade, but it is also perfect for kayak camping. If you’ve been kayak camping, you know that your kayak seat is often the most comfortable seat in the house…or outdoors. The Versa-Brella makes a great shade for sitting by the river at the end of the day. Just leave it clipped to the back of your seat and adjust it so it blocks the sun. Easy as that.
